A Recap of Mat’s Mishap…

Back in early January of 2005, Mat was but a wee apprentice. He worked under what I called the stupidest journeyman alive. This journeyman forgot or didn’t care to inform Mat that he turned the power back on in the area they were working in. So Mat, thinking the wires weren’t live, went about his work unsuspectingly. On a ladder – only a few feet up thank goodness. Then all of a sudden! Bzzt!! (it’s supposed to be an electrical sound, not a bee) He gets shocked and flies off the ladder, slamming on the ground. It amazed me that Mat didn’t yell or hit his journeyman when he got up, but maybe that is just what I would do. And I don’t remember if he went to the hospital to get his heart checked out that day or not. Probably not, he’s bad about that. But it wasn’t his heart that took the brunt of it.

A day later, Mat complains of stomach pains. Another day passes, more pains. Another day passes, more pains. I tell him he should go to the doctor. Oh nooo. He goes online to WebMD.com while I’m sleeping (I’m starting to hate that site) – DIAGNOSES himself with something, and drives to the hospital (and I’m still sleeping!) to get checked out. Shows what kind of doctor he’d be, he was wrong in his diagnosis. So him thinking, he’ll just get a prescription or something and come back home, slip into bed and I’d be none the wiser … turns out his appendix was dilating and they needed to remove it. Out he goes. And I’m at home, catching my Zzzz’s. In case you couldn’t tell I’m still not over it. It will probably be the story I nag him about until I’m eighty.

When he was under, the doctor opened him up and found something odd. Now, forgive me if I don’t explain it completely right. I am no doctor. Inside your stomach, there are appendages that somewhat line it. For what, I don’t know. From what this doctor said, they don’t have a purpose. I now think they do. One appendage had broken free and died, falling onto his appendix. Causing the appendix to get all angry and dilate. Appendages don’t just die and flop over typically. So the doctor even said it must be from the impact of the fall off the ladder. The doctor also found his stomach was pooling blood from the appendage.

Cut to Dept. of Labor and Industry battles that last years, but we end up winners. Finally tens of thousands we don’t have to worry about…

    So you sued and won?

Gosh I'm so glad he sneaked in to the hosp though because if he had just stayed home, then it could have been so much worse.

I know it would be better if you know and you should bag him with that story until he is 90, but so glad he went in and they realized it was much worse than he thought. Not that I wanted it to be worse. Just that I'm glad they figured out it wa smore than what he thought.

And so glad you don't have to worry about the money anymore.
