The Box…

I’m sure many of you have seen the previews for this movie:

Norma and Arthur Lewis, a suburban couple with a young child, receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences. A mysterious stranger, delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world; someone they don’t know. With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the cross-hairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity.

Quite the conundrum…Mat and I of course picked it apart and discussed what we would do if we were put in that situation. He likes to think he would be able to resist the temptation. A co-worker of his scoffed, “I don’t know the person so I’d have no problem taking the money…”

My take on it is this…Unless it were a life or death decision for me or someone I loved – There is no way I’d take the money. Yeah we live paycheck to paycheck for the most part, but hello! That’s a life. Someone’s brother, father, sister, mother, friend, lover, cousin, son, daughter…etc. That is some ONE.

Granted, I know it’s a movie, but humor me a little. What would you do??

Hey hey… well first off, the hub and I have discussed this movie ourselves, because he's all pissed off that its taken from an old Twilight Zone episode. I'm all like whatev…

I honestly though don't think I'd be able to take the money though, knowing that someone would die if I did. Crap, I have a hard enough time just looking at the sheep next door knowing that they'll be on someones dinner plate!!

No brainer here.(After all, SOMEONE is listening.) Even if we don't know the person…he IS a 'brother'. You have to live with yourself and sometimes it's hard 'nuf as it is. Hmmmmm. I wonder who the mysterious 'man' is?

ever since I saw the commercial, this has been on my mind. I believe that there is no way that I could be responsible for the death of someone. its just too horrible to think about.

  4. Mrs. Fish aka Two Fish says:

I would not have to think about that. If someone would die…a life is totally priceless! Well with the exception of one….snicker…no all kidding aside, I too would not want to be responsible for anyone's death. Just not me.

They couldn't even make a movie about my response. It's an unequivocal no. I wouldn't even consider it for a half second. No way. Do you feel what I'm dealin' here?

OOh that's a good one! I personally prefer the short story "THE BOX" by Bruce Coville (*highly recommend it :)

I agree with you and the other commenters–a resounding no way! Money is so overrated, and definitely not worth harming someone.

Having gone through some extremely tough financial times recently, including bankruptcy, I can see how someone could be tempted. But I would NEVER take another human life for money! Life is too precious, no matter who's it is, even if I didn't know the person. Even if it was the person who embezzled $200,000 from us causing us to declare bankruptcy.
